National Security Council


National Security Council

The National Security Council Act B.E. 2559 (2016) stipulates that the “National Security Council (NSC)” is the main organization for national security responsible for setting policy directions; proposing strategies, guidelines, and measures to prevent and solve security problems; formulating national policies and plans on national security; monitoring, evaluating, analyzing and warning of strategic threats; providing recommendations to the National Security Council, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet; compiling information and disseminating knowledge; administrating, coordinating and monitoring performances of relevant agencies that jointly drive security missions.

The National Security Council is comprised of 10 members: the Prime Minister as the Chairman of the Council; the Deputy Prime Ministers assigned by the Prime Minister as the Vice Chairman of the Council; and the Ministers of Defense, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Transport, Digital Economy and Society, Interior, Justice and the Supreme Commander as members with the Secretary-General of the National Security Council as a member and secretary.

Duties and Authority of the National Security Council

Formulate national policies and plans on national security, and submit them to the Cabinet for consideration.

Provide recommendations and opinions on proposing national strategies in the security dimensions or issues related to national security, or amendment or revision of laws related to national security, to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, or relevant government agencies, as the case may be.

Consider formulation of specific security strategies or plans, national preparedness plans, and crisis management plans related to national security.

Determine approaches or measures to prevent or solve problems related to national security for submitting them to the Prime Minister or the Cabinet for consideration.

Assess and analyze overall strategic situations that pose threats to national security.

Administer and monitor implementation of national policies and plans on national security.

Perform other duties as prescribed in this Act and other laws, or as assigned by the Prime Minister or the Cabinet.
